The Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) Nuclear Instrumentation System course uses state-of-the-art teaching techniques and actual BWR NIS equipment to instill knowledge and competence at all levels of system operation, maintenance and troubleshooting. This is a comprehensive program incorporating both formal classroom and laboratory hands-on training

Unlike conventional, classroom-only training courses, the method of presentation for this program is designed to obtain maximum learning and retention. This is accomplished by continuously reinforcing the classroom lectures and discussions with hands-on demonstrations and exercises both during and immediately following the classroom sessions. This continuous cycling from classroom to laboratory environment not only reinforces the learning process, but maintains student interest and aids the instructor in identifying and correcting weaknesses as they occur.

The classroom phases consist of lectures, seminars and discussions covering topics ranging from theory of operations, system components, inputs and outputs, and protective features to signal tracing and troubleshooting. Aided by computer graphics and interaction, the students develop a solid foundation in the theory of operation of the various subsystems.

The laboratory portion consists of demonstrations, surveillances, calibrations, and troubleshooting exercises that not only serve as reinforcement of the textbook learning process, but also generate a level of comfort with equipment operation that cannot be accomplished elsewhere.

The laboratory consists of two stations of fully functional General Electric equipment:

  • Start-up Range NIS Cabinet, consisting of both Source Range and Intermediate Range instruments, complete with pre-amp assemblies
  • Power Range NIS Cabinet LPRM channels supplying signals to APRM circuitry

All units are complete and functional and, allowing for the laboratory environment, are indistinguishable from installed plant equipment.
